Explore the surroundings

If you follow Præstegårdsvej and continue along Sandsporet, you’ll come to a lovely child-friendly beach, where nature provides hours of entertainment for the little ones and a lovely dip for the older ones.

In the old, charming village of Kulhuse, there’s a harbour and a child-friendly sandy beach, shops and the vast Nordskov forest all within easy reach. The fjord is also great for fishing, and the ferry service takes you across the fjord to Sølager. You can also reach Hundested quickly, which boasts a brewery, a glassblowing workshop and arts and crafts studios. At Kulhuse harbour, you can also see the remains of the Englænderskansen defence fortifications, built against the English in 1808 to protect the cannon factory in Frederiksværk. In Nordskov, you’ll find the oldest oak trees (600, 800 and 1,500 years old) in Denmark and indeed in Europe, where you can follow the signposted walking trails. The forest is also home to the royal hunting lodge, built in 1857. In Jægerspris, you can explore the old castle and treat yourselves to an ice cream from Poulsens Isbod, which has been selling ice cream since 1913. Jægerspris Mill is still in operation, and you can also buy fresh flour there in the summer. A little further away lies the nearest town, ‘Frederikssund’, where you can go shopping and eat out. You can also explore the charming town of Roskilde with its Viking museum and cathedral, and take a stroll along the fjord.
