Langgade in Stege is the city's historical main artery, stretching through the old medieval town, which was founded in the 13th century. The street has served as a center for trade for centuries, especially in the heyday of the Middle Ages, when herring fishing dominated, and in the 19th century with the establishment of the sugar factory. Today, the street is characterized by historic houses and modern commercial life.
